patience is a virtue

“Patience is a virtue, Possess it if you can, Seldom found in woman, Never found in man”

Those words were said often by my Nana when I was little and apparently I learned it very early. I have been told that I was a very patient child. I was always good at waiting my turn and even when I was over excited for a trip or something fun I could wait pretty quietly for it to happen.

When I was 8 and over the last 20 years I have learned even more patience in helping take care of my multiply disabled little brother. He is and will most likely stay around a 5 year old level and because of his OCD and sometimes manic outbursts, patience is needed. Sometimes when I am out with him having dinner or in a store and he has one of his outbursts I can usually calm him down pretty quickly. I get asked by waiters and people around us how I do it. I usually respond "Patience and understanding" I never really thought about my answer till now.

I now realize how patient I am in every day life. I don't mind waiting in long lines. Going to the motor vehicle office doesn't bug me. Traffic doesn't bother me.

I wrote a little while ago about our 10 year plan. How very early on in dating we knew we wanted to get married, but the Hubby is a planner so everything needed to be in place before we did. That meant 4 years till he proposed. I remember wanting to get marred asap. Wanting to start our lives together as husband and wife. I would bug him about it every once in a while, but it was playful. I didn't realize just how patient I am till I received this comment from Kate @ Infertile First Mom.
What a reward that would be for all those times you had to hear, eventually!
One reason I know you will be an excellent mother is because you have had to become extremely patient!! But you have waited long enough. Time to let your husband be proven right.
I have been patient. Very patient. Patient through the almost 3 years of TTC. Patient through 9 babies very close to us being conceived and born in that time. Patient while watching 4 of those babies for over a year. Patient through 4 and now starting my 5th baby blanket to give away. Patient through 4 failed IUIs and in my 2WW of our 5th. Patiently letting my cousin repaint and use my Dad's/my old baby dresser till I am ready to use it. Patient through all the questions about when we are having a baby from all our friends and family. And so much more.

I am tired of being so patient, yet I still am and will probably continue to be. That's just me.

“Patience is a virtue, Possess it if you can, Seldom found in woman, Never found in man”

That saying makes me giggle now. After being married and seeing how impatient the Hubby is with a lot of little things, I find myself quoting my Nana. And when I do the Hubby laughs and sticks his tongue out at me. I guess the saying is right. ;)

Another song on my IF mix and that I listen to often. <3 Guns N' Roses

  1. I love your nana's saying! I have been reading your blog for a little while now and we sound so much alike! I also have so much patience people always ask me how I do it. I also am tired of making baby blankets for others and hope to make one to keep someday too! I hope one day we both get our BFP's and we can make one to keep and to give to each other :) Best of luck with this cycle. You have been patient long enough!

  2. I love the saying. Patience is always something I struggle with. Matt has always been patient one in our relationship.

    1. It always seems to be a yin yang thing. One person is one way and the partner is the opposite.

  3. Patience can be such a funny thing. My husband is usually so impatient, and I'm the one who will wait as long as it takes, but we're completely opposite at Abby's bedtime.

I love reading your stories about your family, especially wise words from them!

Here's hoping none of us have to patiently wait too much longer for our babies!

  4. Good lord I think if all of us IFchicks took our patience and bottled it we could make a million in a day.
How long have we all waited, smiling in public only to cry at home, wishing others well...and making blankets in hope that you get to make one to keep soon.
Huggs my dear! no one knows patience like us.

  5. I am incredibly impatient, which is what made TTC so freaking unbearable. It also made pregnancy kind of tough because 40 weeks (well, 31 in my case) can feel like a long time. Here's hoping you don't have to be patient for much longer!

    1. Who knows, I might turn totally impatient when pregnant and waiting to meet my little one. Thanks.

  6. Oh boy, I wish I were more like you. Unfortunately I am not!! I am super impatient, and like, more like, need, to get things done and fast all the time. Which often times leads to lots of mess ups and do overs!! You are going to make such a wonderful mommy someday...you're right, you have been patient enough, time to reap its rewards :) xoxo

  9. I'm so glad my comment helped you to remember that virtue within yourself:) Thanks for the link back;) I love your Nana's quote... and the song! I definitely have more patience than Riggo!

I hope your patience continues to help you through this part of your journey, as it will when you get your miracle and he/she is running around driving you crazy! ;)

    1. I hope it continues too. I think it might be wearing thin though. Oh I can't wait for that day. I can just hear myself giggling and saying "you are driving mommy crazy" lol!

  10. I used to have a big problem with impatience. In fact, my foster mom often sang the following to me "Have patience, have patience, don't be in such a hurry. When you get inpatient you only start to worry. Remember, remember that God is patient too. And think of all the times when others have to wait on you." The last line isn't very applicable in this situation, but I sometimes think of the rest of the song when I'm getting really worked up about the wait for a baby. I hope that all the waiting we're doing is worth it some day (very) soon.

    1. That is really cute! I really like it. Probably going to borrow that. It will be so worth it. Hoping soon for all of us.

  11. Obviously I meant impatient not inpatient. Can you tell I've been doing social work charting all day??

  13. I officially thing being patient is the WORST! When you learn how to be more patient, please let me know! I need lessons! Lol

  14. I agree with Heather, you should give patience lessons! In my household there was a saying too, "Never Pray for Patience." Apparently it stems from a religious verse or saying that says something like patience is gained through trials and tribulations. You have certainly had your share.

    1. My Nana should give the lessons. I have heard that somewhere before. I will have to looks it up. So very true how you gain patience from trials and tribulations.

  15. Your capacity for patience is amazing, especially in traffic! I think you've definitely been patient long enough. Hope the universe thinks so, too!

    1. Thanks. People think I'm strange when I say I don't mind traffic. Some days I actually enjoy it. It makes me slow down.

  16. I am extremely impatient. Sometimes it's served me well, and sometimes it's gotten me in trouble. It would be nice for patience to be rewarded ... otherwise it starts to feel like martyrdom. Here's hoping you needn't be patient much longer!

    1. There have been little rewards for being patient if I really look. With my brother he behaves very well with me because he knows the tantrums don't work (the ones he can help) and with my Hubby I am glad we had all the extra time to grow as a couple. Still haven't figured out the little reward for waiting for a baby other than the baby itself which hasn't come yet.
