going to be afk till wednesday

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to let you all know I will be leaving in 5 hours on a last min trip till late Tuesday night. Unfortunately it is not going to be a fun one.

My Mom drove with my alcoholic Nana to Florida and major shit hit the fan. To the point where we may never talk to Nana again. It's a long story, but I basically lost my relationship with her a very long time ago after trying to help her for years and got nowhere. I don't have much in the way of feelings towards her anymore, haven't for years.

Anyway, she is being sent home on a bus and I am flying down to drive back with my Mom and Brother. My Moma and Popa (who they were visiting) are a little nervous about my Mom driving alone and I could tell she was too even though she said she was fine. So, I am being an awesome daughter and am going to be there for her.

I'm a little worried I will not be able to hide my pregnancy from my Mom since I will be driving for 2 days in the car with her. Just today out of nowhere I started to feel icky. No real nausea yet, but just lots of ickyness.

Please pray or send good thoughts that I feel good for the next few days. I will be packing lots of snacks and tums. Gotta keep my tummy full and happy.

I will also have to postpone my U/s for at least 1 day. It sucks, but it can wait. I will also have to be frisked at the airport since I can't go in the xray! YAY!! Kinda excited about that.

I feel bad I am going to be so behind on your posts. I'm sorry in advance.

So, please wish me luck and keep me in your thoughts.

Anyone have any travel tips for me?

  1. I skipped the scanner at the airport because I wasn't sure if I was pregnant. They tried to tell me I couldn't opt out, which isn't true. Good luck!

    1. I was so lucky and actually didn't have to go through one! I was planning on opting out no matter what. Thanks!

  2. First off, ((hugs)). I'm really sorry about your nana. That is such a sad situation for everyone involved.
As for some traveling while pregnant tips- Carry on your bag!! You might need a change of clothes. Take this from someone who is not a puker on planes but totally threw up all over myself when I flew at 11.5 weeks. Be sure to have the barf bag in your lap just in case. You might not start throwing up by then (or ever in your pregnancy, fingers crossed!) but it's way better to be safe than sorry, or in my case very very sorry as I also threw up on the (rather attractive and French) man next to me.
I always opt out of the body scanner, pregnant or not. I figure I'm already being exposed to radiation by being on a plane so why expose myself to any additional radiation? Be prepared to have the TSA people be a bit grumpy about the process. I always politely say "I'd prefer a pat down." and am super patient with them as they try to find a female worker to do it. If you haven't opted out before, be prepared for the fact that you won't be allowed to touch your luggage/bags until the pat down is complete. While the TSA workers are supposed to keep your stuff within your line of sight, they often are cranky about that as well. Chances are good the worker will also lecture you about how the machines aren't bad while pregnant, etc. etc. I just nod and don't comment. ;)
Good luck with the trip. I'm sorry about the circumstances that led to it, I unfortunately understand how these things are in families.

    1. Thanks Breanna. I only had a backpack so I had everything carried on with me. I was lucky and didn't have to go through the scanner. They opened a new line when it was my turn and a security guy told me to go to the new line which only had a metal detector! YAY!

  3. The one time I said "I opt out", the agent looked at me and said "you're pregnant?" I said yes and she said "shhhh, don't say that" she sent me through the old fashioned metal detector, no frisking required. From then on, I always stuck my stomach out real far, looked the person right in the eye and said "I'm pregnant.". I always got the metal detector and was never frisked.

    1. Thanks Jen! I was actually thinking about pushing my belly out because I'm already chubby and can look pregnant if I want to. I was lucky enough that I was in a line with just a metal detector.

  4. Pat downs are awesome! Especially with everyone staring at you :) The TSA agent tried to tell me the X-ray machine was safe even if I am pregnant, I had to get a little snippy with her to get out of it. My doctor recommended getting up and walking around every two hours to stretch my legs on a plane and while driving. I had tons of snacks on my car and plane trips but was still nauseous. Having an aisle seat helped so i could get to the bathroom quickly. Make sure to drink a lot of water, too. Even though it's not under the best circumstances, I hope you have a good trip!

    1. Thanks Audrey! There were a lot of people being frisked while I was there. I think all of them had metal and medical stuff in their bodies and couldn't go through. I thank goodness only had to go through the metal detector. Thanks for the reminder to get up and walk around. I did as much as possible. I made sure I had snacks and lots of water.

  5. Don't worry about being behind on posts! that should be the last on your list to think of.
Be safe, I'll pray! and just take this time to enjoy some alone time with your momma. I know it's a bummer to push back the U/s but it's better than being stressed out about your mom driving all by herself. I know it's not good circumstances, and I'm so sorry that you can't have a good relationship with your nana, but remember God doesn't hand us anything we can't handle, he hands us stuff to make us stronger and better people.

    1. Thanks Kat! I had a good time with my Mom. Thanks for the reminder how God doesn't give us anything we can't handle. It has actually is helping me with the whole twin thing. I always knew we could do it, but I guess all the hormones are making me question if we can or not.

  6. Tell them they need to buy you a nice dinner first before they can frisk you. A bit of humor does help. I can't go through the xray machine either because I usually have to use a cane or leg brace when I walk.

Keep some ginger snaps on hand to help with the nausea.

    1. LOL! I am going to remember that for next time! Thank goodness I didn't even need to get frisked. I have ginger snaps next to my bed just in case and I will be carrying some with me now in my purse just in case. I also got so of those preggie pops just in case. Thanks Rebecca!

  7. Hard candies (sour ones especially, for me) can help with sudden bouts of nausea, though hopefully you won't need them. Pack or buy a large water bottle and fill it up as soon as you land (I know you can't carry one on)... This will help you stay hydrated and give you an excuse for all the extra bathroom trips on your road trip (if mom notices, blame it on the extra water you've committed to drinking for health reasons) It'll be true, if not the exact reason;)
Sorry you're having to do this (esp missing the u/s), but it sounds like its the right thing to do and your family will appreciate it. Take good care!

    1. Thanks Hon! I was going to bring my water bottle empty, but I forgot it. I bought a bottle after security and was good. Thank goodness we stopped a lot because of my brother. I think there was only once where I told her we had to stop, but we needed gas anyway and I was driving so it was all good.

  9. Sorry for the family kerfluffle, I've had my share of them too. I hope you will enjoy the time with your mom in any case. :)

No experience with traveling while pregnant, but definitely keep snacks (of all sorts) on hand. Also, you can take an empty water bottle with you past security and then fill it up once inside or on the plane. It's what I do these days so I can have my tons of water and not bug the stewardesses all the time.

    1. I did enjoy the time with my Mom and she really appreciated that I came. I snacked all the time because I was so scared of feeling icky! I forgot my water bottle at home but bought one after security so I was fine. Thanks Heather!

  10. You are such a kind daughter. I have never traveled pregnant, but do tend to get barfy and anxious on long driving trips. My favorite car snacks is dry cereal (the kind with lots of fiber to keep me regular) and grapes. Travel safely and take care of yourself. I promise that all our blogs will be here when you return :) I'm sending lots of good thoughts to you!
